Climate-Resilient Health systems and Indigenous Communities in Peru
Completed
Title: Pathways to enhance Indigenous participation in developing climate resilience health systems: A Peruvian Case Study (2024-2025)
This study identifies specific actions to enhance Indigenous participation in building climate-resilient health systems. The main aim of the study is to collect insights into Indigenous communities’ lived experiences, particularly their relationship with biodiversity and sense of place, to inform strategies for strengthening climate-resilient health systems. We conducted three weeks of fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon to achieve this objective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with members of three Ashaninka Indigenous communities: San Pascual, Atahualpa, and Boca de Chenique. The data gathered will contribute to a deeper understanding of climate-related health risks (e.g., disease transmission) and community-led responses in the Peruvian Amazon. Study findings will be shared with the local Indigenous organization to support ongoing community engagement and knowledge exchange.
