Title: Community-based Shrimp Aquaculture in Northwestern Sri Lanka (2011-2013)
This project explores the sustainability of small-scale community-based shrimp aquaculture (CBSA) in northwestern Sri Lanka as an alternative to large-scale operations. Through fieldwork in three shrimp farming regions in Sri Lanka using participant observations, interviews, and focus group discussions, the study examines common institutions, governance structures, and policy implications. Findings highlight that the use of multi-level commons governance, zonal crop calendar system, participatory management, and best practices help farmers collectively manage ship farming sustainably. A SWOT analysis confirms CBSA’s viability, demonstrating its role in fostering social-ecological resilience. This research underscores CBSA as a sustainable approach to balancing aquaculture development with environmental and community well-being.
